The recognition of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2019 has marked an irreconcilable dividing line between Russia and Ukraine in the ecclesiastical sphere too. Yet, this intra-orthodox development has effects that reach far beyond Ukraine and Russia, impacting neighboring countries such as Romania. While Romania expresses its full sympathy for Ukraine in this war of aggression, the Romanian Orthodox Church has not (yet) confirmed its recognition of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This article aims to provide some background details.
