A Protestáns Teológiai Intézet az erdélyi magyar református, unitárius és evangélikus egyházak lelkipásztorképző egyeteme. Az Intézet önálló jogi személy, a román oktatási rendszerben akkreditált státusszal rendelkező felsőoktatási intézmény.

The Protestant Theological Institute of Cluj-Napoca (PTI) is an independent university, accredited by the Romanian Ministry of Education. Its main aim is to train Reformed, Lutheran and Unitarian ministers.
The Institute wishes to set theology into the service of the church communities, living in a multicultural and multiconfessional society. This mission is carried out in an open irenic fashion while implementing high academic standards. The PTI intends to create a strong theological dialogue with other academic fields which are relevant to the Christian message and tradition.
The Protestant Churches (Reformed, Lutheran and Unitarian) represent a minority among the people living in Romania (ca. 3.6% of the total population is a member of these churches). The Protestant Churches which are closely connected to the Hungarian-speaking inhabitants appear typically (though not exclusively) in the Transylvanian region. According to the census from 2011, there are more than 700,000 Reformed Protestants (ca. 95% Hungarian-speaking), about 67,000 Unitarians (ca. 97% Hungarian-speaking), and about 27,000 Lutherans (ca. 56% Hungarian-speaking).
- 1568 – Ca urmare a Reformei se înfiinţează în cadrul Colegiul Unitarian din Cluj, un curs special pentru formarea preoţilor unitarieni.
- 1622 – În timpul lui Gabriel Bethlen, principele Transilvaniei s-a înfiinţat academia teologică Collegium Academicum în Alba Iulia pentru formarea preoţilor reformaţi.
- 1662 – Academia Collegium Academicum s-a mutat la Aiud.
Motivația existentei și originile
Institutul Teologic Protestant din Cluj-Napoca (ITP) este universitatea comună a trei biserici protestante, înființată în scopul formării preoților pentru Eparhia Reformată din Transilvania, Eparhia Reformată de pe lângă Piatra Craiului, Biserica Unitariană Maghiară și Biserica Evanghelică-Lutherană din România. Conform tradiției de mai multe secole ale învățământului bisericesc europene și transilvănene, ITP reprezintă comunitatea academică a profesorilor și studenților (universitas magistrorum et scholarium).
